John Slaby

–

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

John Garrett Slaby, a charismatic and inspiring figure in the Philadelphia art community, was born on July 18, 1983, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. With a talent that was undeniable and a wit that was infectious, John dedicated the majority of his life to the world of art. He held the prestigious position of artist and registrar at The West Collection for 18 years, a testament to his dedication and skill in the field. In 2012, he was the proud recipient of the West Prize, an accolade that perfectly encapsulated his passion and talent.

John's art was not just his profession, but also his hobby and passion. He spent countless hours in his studio, his haven, creating pieces that were as captivating as his personality. Beyond the canvas, he was a member of the NESC Northeast Skate Club and enjoyed skateboarding, hiking, and biking, activities that allowed his adventurous spirit to thrive. His love for travel was also well-known, and he often found inspiration for his art in the different cultures and landscapes he encountered on his journeys.

John was a beacon of inspiration to those around him, always encouraging others to find their passion and nurturing a diverse group of friends. He had a knack for bringing people together, creating a sense of community wherever he went. His love story with his fiancée, Laura Wallace, began in England on a business trip. Their transatlantic relationship spanned seven beautiful years, with Laura becoming not just his partner, but the love of his life.

John is survived by his parents , Mary and John Slaby; his sister, Melissa and her husband, Éric Runz; his uncle, Edward Slaby and his wife, Donna; his aunt, Frances Owens; his uncle, Charles Winkler; and his beloved fiancée, Laura Wallace, as well as numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Catherine and William Garrity; his paternal grandparents, Helen and John Slaby; his aunt, Ann Winkler; and cousin, James Owens.

As we remember John, let us draw comfort from the words of the New Testament, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). John indeed fought a good fight, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art and in the hearts of those who knew him.
