Gunther
Jeanne Leyden Gunther, 79, of West Chester, passed away on October 22, 2026 surrounded by family.
Jeanne was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a gifted artist whose creativity, curiosity, and appreciation for the world around her were reflected throughout her life and work.
A talented artist from an early age, Jeanne graduated Summa Cum Laude from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Oil Painting. Over the course of her artistic career, she worked in charcoal, oil, and pastel, developing a distinctive body of work that combined technical skill with warmth, personality, and often a playful sense of humor.
Jeanne was an active and respected member of the arts community. She was involved with Saratoga Arts, the Philadelphia/Tri-State Artist Equity Association, the Delaware Valley Art League, Wayne Art Center, and the Philadelphia Pastel Society. Her work appeared in numerous juried exhibitions and earned a number of honors, including the Hill School Award for Excellence, the Audubon Nature Award, and awards from the Philadelphia Water Color Society’s International Exhibition. Her pieces featuring crows and other subjects captured her imagination, creativity, and playful spirit.
While Jeanne took great pride in her art and the recognition she received, her greatest legacy is found in the people who loved her and the lives she touched. She was a person of great faith and spirituality. She will be remembered not simply for what she created on canvas and paper, but for humor, generosity and devotion to family.
Jeanne is predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years Bill Gunther. Loving mom to her children; Michael (Sue) and Ted (Emily). Cherished Grandma of Jack and Madalyn. She is also survived by her sisters Maureen Cincotta (the late John), Sharon McShane (Roger) and Kate Leyden (Greg Walters) and many nieces and nephews.
Jeanne leaves behind a beautiful body of work, but an even more meaningful legacy in the family, friends, and community who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation Thursday October 29th 10:00 AM at St. Agnes Church 233 W Gay St, West Chester, PA 19380. Funeral Mass 11:00 AM. Interment Private. A special exhibition of Jeanne’s artwork will be held at a later date in celebration of her life and artistic legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. Please see link below.
